FASHION, ARTISANS & ARCHITECTURE:
DESIGN DIRECTOR, RHIAN BARKER

Introducing Design Director, Rhian Barker. Since joining Accouter Design in 2013, Rhian oversees the creative output of the Design team; to manage, mentor and drive projects through to completion with a keen eye for detail, budget and brief. Rhian’s artwork has also been exhibited in various galleries in the UK and showcased residential work in Australia Vogue. In this article, Rhian reveals her current favourite British Artisan, fashion house and more.

FAVOURITE BRITISH ARTISAN

Accouter Design are always on the lookout for new innovative artisans to collaborate with. Hand in hand with that comes the ever-evolving research into more sustainable design and materials. Click here to read the studios responsibility pledge. Inspired by nature and bright colours, Rhian shares why she is enthused by Worm.

Worm started in 2016 in East London. What once began as a book and bunch delivery service has since evolved to; designing flowers for occasions, print and conceptual projects. Creators of Worm, Katie and Terri, often share how they were inspired by many things starting with the imperfect wildflowers that grew around them when growing up on the coast of southern Ireland.

“Worm London have the most spectacular floral installations. I admire these artisans as they are constantly inspiring creativity and showcase trailblazing new trends within their industry.”

FAVOURITE FASHION HOUSE

Fashion is always at the forefront for inspiration when the designers are designing a new scheme. Before lockdown, you would often find the team out visiting various exhibitions and galleries to learn more about the practices used and ideas behind the amazing pieces.

Within that, was the visit to view the intimate ‘Roses’ exhibition at the flagship store of Alexander McQueen on Old Bond Street, London. As part of an ongoing series of events called ‘Unlocking Stories’ the exhibition celebrated a selection of work created by the late Alexander McQueen and current creative director, Sarah Burton.

Rhian recalls, “Now and always. I love the bold statements and stories this fashion house makes. For a visual overload, I always look to a Tim Walker and McQueen collaboration.”

You can view more of the designer’s fashion inspirations and where they have used them in their award-winning schemes on their Pinterest account.

FAVOURITE SOCIAL ACCOUNT

For Rhian, a key Instagram account she enjoys for daily inspiration is Whinnie Williams’ account.

“What’s not to love? She’s a style icon, interiors guru, bunny loving and lover of all things 70s retro. I also love her fabrics and textiles over on
Poodle & Blonde alongside Kiera Campbell.”

Accouter Design are also delighted to announce that their Instagram has been nominated in the ‘Best Use of Instagram’ category for the Amara Interior Blog Awards 2020. Sharing not only exclusive schemes and designs, but their Instagram has also become a real source for inspiration for many. Just like the designs, every image they choose is carefully positioned on the timeline so that the colours and the story flow with every scroll.

*Voting closes Friday 4th September 2020.

FAVOURITE LOCATION

The Accouter Design studio consistently delivers world-class interior architectural and furnishing services to an ever-growing list of international private clients and developers. When creating an award-winning scheme, travel often impacts on the designers’ understanding of the client’s location, culture and surrounding areas.

“I get inspiration from everywhere! When I came back from Milan, I was inspired by the beautiful architecture of the city – the wonderful piazzas, courtyards of Brera. Or I might be sifting through the antique markets in Paris. A couple of years ago, I spent the summer in South America and sought inspiration in the vibrant colours and textured weaved fabrics and astounding landscapes. For now, even though I miss travelling, I can’t wait to go back to The Newt in Somerset.”
